The Seachem Ammonia Alert Water Tester for Fish Tanks is a cutting-edge color device that detects and monitors toxic free ammonia in real-time. Relative to the ammonia concentration, a sensor changes reversibly from yellow to green to blue. There are no test kits, chemicals, or procedures required. The device detects free ammonia levels of less than 0.05 mg/L (ppm) and alerts you to the #1 killer before any sign of stress. It lasts for more than a year. This product should not be used at acidic pH levels. Use in saltwater or freshwater.
Ammonia Alert outlasts competitors by over 9 times and is nearly half the size of competitors. It's small, clear, and unobtrusive, so it won't obstruct your view of your aquarium.
In the absence of free ammonia, the unit will turn yellow or pale yellow-green. It is normal for the dry sensor to be greenish in colour. A dry sensor may take several days to equilibrate with the water. There is no need for water, chemical, or test procedures sampling. The presence of free ammonia is continuously detectable, with a response time of about 15 minutes. The response to decreasing ammonia is slower, taking about 4 hours to go from TOXIC to SAFE after ammonia removal.
Aside from removing algae with clean, soft material, no additional care is required. Touching the sensor with your fingers is not recommended because skin oils can damage it. To clean the sensor, do not use bleach, soap, detergents, or hard objects. Some dye medications have the potential to discolour the sensor. Sensitivity improves with age as long as the unit is not allowed to dry out; however, drying does not permanently degrade the unit. The unit should be read in natural daylight or daylight-simulating light for maximum sensitivity. Red enhancing light reduces the apparent sensitivity of the unit by reducing green and blue hues. The unit's response can be tested by briefly holding it over the mouth of an ammonia bottle: colour should appear quickly.
