The Seachem StressGuard Water Conditioner for Fish Tanks is a premium slime coat protection product. When handling or transporting fish, StressGuard reduces stress and ammonia toxicity. StressGuard binds to exposed protein in wounds to promote healing and reduce the likelihood of primary and secondary infections in injured fish. Except for copper-based medications, StressGuard is compatible with all medications. StressGuard does not contain any amines and does not coat resins or clog filtration, as competing "slime coat" products do.
StressGuard's ability to heal is attributed to the presence of protein active colloids. This protein-active colloidal agent actively seeks out any wounds, abrasions, or areas with exposed proteins and attaches to them to help directly deliver the disinfectant in the product and begin the healing process. Because it binds to the exposed proteins, this protein-active colloid also acts as a liquid bandage for abrasion.
Some products are marketed to be squirted in the bag when purchasing a fish. Those products are generally acidic, with some being extremely acidic. Putting such a product in a small, enclosed container with fish frequently causes more harm than good. The pH of StressGuard is 7.0. Even at high concentrations, it has no effect on the pH of an aquarium.
