Two Little Fishies NPX Bioplastics Filtration Media (200ml) is a granular filter media made from biodegradable polymers. It provides a slow, time-released carbon food source for beneficial bacteria in both saltwater and freshwater aquariums, promoting the assimilation of nitrate and phosphate.

Features & Benefits:

  • Reduces nitrates and phosphates: The bacteria that colonize the bioplastics consume nitrates and phosphates from the water. These nutrients are then removed from the system as the bacteria slough off the pellets.
  • Feeds invertebrates: In marine aquariums, the bacteria that reproduce on the media serve as a food source for filter-feeding invertebrates such as corals, clams, and sponges.
  • Promotes ecosystem balance: By controlling nutrient levels, the product helps create cleaner, more stable aquarium conditions.
  • Offers long-term use: The pellets are consumed slowly, so they do not need to be replaced as often as other filtration media.

How to use

  • For best results, use Two Little Fishies NPX Bioplastics in a fluidized media reactor, which keeps the pellets tumbling in the water column.
  • The media can also be used in a media bag within a filtration compartment.

Important considerations:

  • Start with a lower dose: Add media incrementally to avoid a bacterial bloom, which can lead to cloudy water and reduced oxygen levels. The manufacturer recommends 100 ml per 100 L (about 25 gallons).
  • Requires a protein skimmer: In saltwater aquariums, a protein skimmer is necessary to remove the excess bacteria and exported nutrients from the water.
  • Maintain strong flow: Ensure there is sufficient water flow to keep the bioplastics tumbling and prevent the formation of stagnant "dead spots". Inadequate flow can lead to the production of harmful hydrogen sulfide gas.
  • Use with a bacterial starter: Combining the product with a bacterial starter, like Two Little Fishies Bactiv8 NPX, can help accelerate colonization and speed up the nutrient reduction process.
  • Replenish media periodically: The pellets are consumed over time and will need to be topped off every 3 to 6 months.
