The Juwel Phorax Filter Media for Aquariums is a powerful filter medium for breaking down phosphates in your aquarium. This effectively reduces algae growth and may contribute to increased plant growth. Phosphate enters aquariums through fish food and is extremely unlikely to be broken down. Plants, on the other hand, require only trace amounts of phosphate for natural growth (fresh water: 0.05 mg/l, saltwater: 0.01 mg/l). In some cases, too much phosphate can cause excessive algae growth. Phorax is an aluminum mineral that binds dissolved phosphate by forming water-insoluble aluminum phosphate and removing it from the water. JUWEL Phorax is therefore extremely effective, binding up to 12 mg of phosphate per gram of Phorax.
